1. USED TO
El inglés es el idioma de las grandes carencias, comparado con el español.
La mayoría de las cosas que conforman la “gramática inglesa” no son más que trucos para solucionar una carencia grave del idioma. Este es el caso de used to.
En español tenemos dos pasados:
canté – cantaba; soñé – soñaba; empecé – empezaba.
En inglés sólo hay una, que en principio sería tanto canté como cantaba, mientras no se produzca conflicto:
La semana pasada canté en la opera
La semana pasada cantaba todas las mañanas
El problema surge cuando hay conflicto, es decir, cuando no es lo mismo decir canté que cantaba:
De pequeño mi madre me contó un cuento.
De pequeño mi madre me contaba un cuento antes de acostarme: esta oración describe una accion que ocurría de manera habitual en el pasado. En inglés no se podría decir a no ser que se hubiera recurrido a algún tipo de truco: used to.
Used to no significa “solía”. Para esto tenemos “usually”:
I usually smoked – Yo solía fumar
I used to smoke – Yo antes fumaba
I used to go to the gym. Now I'm not fit
I used to love waking up early when I was younger
I used to travel a lot before I had children
Como vemos, "used to" siempre va acompañado de otro verbo a continuación, que es el que aporta sentido léxico a la oración.
Es importante recordar que esta expresión se usa solo para hablar de hábitos en el pasado. Un error muy común entre los estudiantes de inglés es el de trasladarla al presente:
I use to exercise every day (incorrecto)
En el presente podemos usar el adverbio usually o, simplemente, el presente simple:
I (usually) exercise every day
Es decir: se usa para hablar de hábitos o estados pasados que ya no son ciertos en el presente. Es algo que hacías o que era verdad antes, pero que ha terminado.
Significado Esencial: Un hábito o estado del pasado que ya no existe.
Estructura Gramatical: Sujeto + used to + Verbo en forma base (infinitivo)
Negativo: Sujeto + didn't use to + Verbo en forma base
Interrogativo: Did + Sujeto + use to + Verbo en forma base?

2. BE USED TO (Estar acostumbrado a)
Esta estructura se usa para hablar de algo que es normal, familiar o ya no es extraño para ti. Describe un estado actual de familiaridad.
Significado Esencial: Estar aclimatado o familiarizado con una situación.
Estructura Gramatical: Sujeto + verbo "be" (am, is, are, was, were...) + used to + Gerundio (verbo-ing) o Sustantivo.
Ejemplos:
He lives in London, so he is used to the rain.
Vive en Londres, así que está acostumbrado a la lluvia.

3. GET USED TO (Acostumbrarse a)
Esta estructura describe el proceso de adaptarse o familiarizarse con algo nuevo o extraño. Se enfoca en la transición, no en el estado final.
Significado Esencial: El proceso de adaptación a algo nuevo.
Estructura Gramatical: Sujeto + verbo "get" (get, gets, got...) + used to + Gerundio (verbo-ing) o Sustantivo.

It took me a while to get used to the new software.
