El verbo to be significa ser y estar a la vez.

¿Qué percibe un inglés cuando dice I am English?, porque en realidad la traducción correcta al español sería estoy o soy ...

Esta pregunta seguro que nos la hemos hecho alguna vez, pero quizás nunca hemos reparado en que en español tenemos una palabra que también significa “ser y estar” a la vez.
Es la forma neutra del verbo haber: “hay”:

Cuando decimos “Hay un coche en la calle” hablamos de dos cosas:
Ser: Hay algo que “es”, que existe, y se llama coche.
Estar: Está situado en la calle.

Curiosamente, que el verbo to be signifique ser o estar supone una nueva limitación para el inglés, dado que no significa las dos cosas a la vez. Es ser o estar dependiendo de la palabra a la que se refiera. Es decir It is a car, es un coche y it is in the street, está en la calle. Sería confuso que significara las dos cosas a la vez: o es ser o es estar.

Es decir, en su uso normal. divide su significado en dos. Imposible expresar entonces la idea de “hay”, es decir, ser y estar a la vez.

Solución: Anteponer “there”, como un indicador de que el verbo “to be” recupera su significado completo:
There is: “allí hay”, o simplemente “hay” en español.

Vamos a ver esta forma en todas sus variantes.

Para entenderlo rápidamente proponemos una regla de tres. Es extraordinario cómo las matemáticas pueden ayudarnos a entender cómo funciona el inglés.

Si:
Hay ...........................allí es/son: There is/are
Entonces:

Había........................allí era/eran: There was/were
Habrá.......................allí será: There will be
Habría......................allí sería: There would be
Va a haber...............allí va a ser: There is going to be
Ha habido...............allí ha/han sido: There has/have been

Habrá habido.........allí habrá sido: There will have been
Debe haber.............allí debe ser: There must be
Podría haber...........allí podría ser: There could be
